Open Source Revolution

Operating System Monopoly

I was thinking about the company MS and how they basically have enjoyed a monopoly on computer systems and gaming for decades now. The only other option being to buy an Apple computer that comes kitted out with their own operating system. The power of MS has been what I call its two fortresses that maintain it's monopoly.

The first is that every IT company that sells computers will almost always bundle them with Windows for the consumer. The majority of the times you go to buy a personal computer the choices are Windows or absolutely nothing on the device. This is changing on some stores with companies offering to install versions of Linux instead but for the most part tech normies are essentially locked out of getting a PC outside of the control of MS.

The second is that most corporations and state run institutions will use computers that run Windows. When we were in school every single computer used Windows with no exceptions and anytime you go to an office building its the exact same problem. Nobody has been willing to try a free and open source alternative. It would be a benefit to these companies and government funded groups to start using Linux because they wouldn't be paying for the OS like they do with Windows.

Things are definitely changing though as Valve released their Steam Deck last year and companies like System 76 offer Linux computers preinstalled. There are even some versions of Linux that run like Windows. MS has gotten complacent with it's monopoly but they are now being challenged and I think by the end of the decade their monopoly will be well and truly over.
